The descent seemed endless. Elspeth had started to count each step, but had descended so far, for so long, that she gave up. It was exhausting, for each step was a testing, a probing with the toe of her shoe to ensure there was indeed a step to take her weight. Other than the knowledge that she was descending in a wide stone spiral, her progress yielded no intelligence of the nature of this place.
It must, she thought to herself, have been hours now since she had first recovered her senses â all but one of her senses, the caliginous nature of her prison keeping her blind. Or had it been days? Had she slept, her body moving as an automaton while her mind slumbered? The strange effects of the deprivation of her sight and the solid concentration required by her descent had bent her conception of time. She was aware that she felt no hunger, nor thirst, and wondered if her fear and her efforts had exaggerated the chronology of her confinement.
It was a shock to Elspeth when she failed to find another step, instead striking level ground. She inched her foot forward: still no step. Pressing her back to the wall, she slid down its chill, slime-sleek stone until she sat on the ground.
She took to her hands and knees and once more began crawling.
The scale of the place must be vast, she thought to herself. Once more she traced a route along the wall that seemed endless, her progress painful, her skirt and stockings torn by the sharp edges of gravel and broken stone.
Then she felt something different. Something softer.
Something familiar.
Elspeth screamed â a prolonged, wailing, desperate scream as a sudden hopelessness, as dark as the world around her, suddenly welled up and burst forth. As she wailed into the dark, rocking back and forth, she clutched to her breast with desperate hands that which she had found.
The sacking that had been her bedding.
